Leaving at this time of night is easily the dumbest decision I’ve made to date. Even more stupid than fucking my captor. The urgency of escape meant leaving my wallet, my clothing, and all other items behind, even my beloved Kindle.

It doesn’t slow my steps though as the elevator finally arrives on the main floor of Rafael’s building. Without a glance behind me, I quickly exit the private elevator, striding through the lobby, and into the downtown Montreal streets.

I’ll buy a new Kindle at this point. My books will sync. Everything else in his house is replaceable. Anything to avoid having to see him again. My laptop is backed up in the Cloud. When I get a new one, I’ll sign in and download all my files. My ID’s the main issue; that’ll be a pain to get replaced but not impossible.

I take a sharp turn, walking down the connected street when panic begins to set in. When my heartbeat quickens along with my steps and my neck tingles in awareness. I have nothing but my cellphone on me, so with the maps app, I input my apartment’s address and figure out how to get from here to there. My stomach drops when the walking time is recorded at twenty-seven minutes. At midnight. Downtown Montreal. No money or anything useful on me.

Fuck.

I glance toward Rafael’s building, wondering if he’s watching me from his place above, or if he’s coming after me. Maybe he’s given up entirely and will search for me tomorrow. There’s little doubt, I will unfortunately see him again because if his brother’s text message is any indication, he’s not done with me.

Dad, what did you do? What did you get me into?

Either way, being there was about his needs, not my safety. Those men at my house were probably fake. I mean, he’s the damn mafia leader’s brother; of course, they have means. The bullet wound the one soldier on my front step—staged.

Fictional. I should have known. Everything about Rafael is fictional.

Ducking my head, I aim to make myself shrink into the shadows, even while my eyes survey every inch of the sidewalk in front of me, the street to my left, and the sidewalk across the way. And again. Gaze continuously sweeping the area, checking behind me. Not only for Rafael, but anyone.

Dad’s voice creeps into my mind again, instructing me to always be observant, putting aside the grief that accompanies hearing him comes with.

A figure steps out from the shadows of a building, stepping right in front of me. Clasping my lips together, I try my best not to make a noise. Keeping my head low, I move around the figure, hoping this person too is simply someone walking by.

I make it around him, so focused on escape, another figure steps in front of me, my feet halting before I accidentally bump into the person.

“Sorry,” I mumble, moving to step aside them too.

The first one approaches, and the one I’ve nearly walked into throws his arms out, blocking my way.
